What ASN Actually Means
Every block of IP addresses on the public internet is announced by an Autonomous System — a network operator with its own ASN (Autonomous System Number), assigned by a regional registry. An ASN identifies the organization routing that traffic: an ISP, a cloud provider, a university, a corporate network. Looking up an IP's ASN answers "who owns this network," the same question a dedicated ASN Lookup answers directly from an IP or domain.
Reading the Result
- ASN — the numeric identifier for the network operator, e.g. AS13335.
- ISP / organization — the human-readable name behind that ASN — a residential ISP, a hosting company, or a cloud platform.
- Country — where that network block is registered, not necessarily where a specific device using it is physically located.
Notably absent: a street address, city, or precise coordinates. IP geolocation at that granularity is a different (and much less reliable) kind of data than network ownership — IP Info deliberately sticks to ASN, ISP, and country, the layer that's actually derived from how the internet is routed rather than a commercial geolocation database's best guess.
Residential ISP, Data Center, or VPN — Telling Them Apart
The ISP/organization name is the fastest way to sort traffic into one of three broad categories. A named residential ISP (a cable or fiber provider) usually means a real household connection. A cloud platform or hosting company (AWS, Google Cloud, DigitalOcean, and similar) means the traffic is coming from a server, not a person's device — automated requests, a bot, or a service acting on someone's behalf. A VPN or proxy provider's name is usually recognizable on sight, and means the visitor's real network is deliberately hidden. None of these are inherently good or bad signals — what they mean depends entirely on context.
Looking Up a Domain Instead of an IP
IP Info also accepts a domain, resolving it to an IP first — a quick way to see where a website is currently hosted (which cloud provider or hosting company, and which country) without a separate DNS Lookup. This is the same resolution step a browser performs before it can connect at all, just surfaced directly.
