Public vs. Private IP: What 'My IP Address' Actually Means

"What's my IP address" has two different correct answers depending on which IP address is actually meant — the one a device uses on its own local network, and the one the rest of the internet sees. This tool answers the second question, because that's the one that matters to anything outside the local network: a website, a game server, a remote colleague.

Public vs. Private

A device on a home or office network is usually assigned a private address — something in the 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16-31.x.x ranges, visible in an OS network settings panel. That address is only meaningful inside the local network; it's never routed on the public internet. The router sitting at the edge of that network has its own public address instead, and every device behind it shares that one address as far as the outside world can tell — this is Network Address Translation (NAT), and it's why the number this tool reports is almost always different from whatever a device's own network settings show.

Why This Number Matters

The public IP address is what a website, game server, or anyone else on the internet actually sees a connection coming from. It's the address that needs whitelisting for a remote service restricted by IP, the address that shows up in a server's access logs, and the address that determines the general geographic region and ISP a connection appears to originate from.

What Else Gets Reported

Alongside the address itself, this shows the same ownership information IP Info reports for any other IP: the ASN, the ISP or organization operating that network, and the registered country. This is exactly what a website would learn about a visitor during an ordinary page load — nothing more than what's already being sent with every request.

When This Address Changes

A public IP isn't necessarily permanent. Most residential ISPs assign addresses dynamically and rotate them periodically (a modem restart is often enough to trigger a new one); a VPN or proxy replaces the visible address with its own for as long as it's active; mobile carriers frequently show a different address depending on cell tower and network conditions.
