WHOIS lookup

Check a domain's registration details, domain expiry date, registrar, and name servers, formatted clearly.

Results are processed statelessly and never saved as lookup history.

WHOIS, RDAP, and DNS fallback results are formatted clearly.

WHOIS Lookup queries the domain registry directly for a domain's registration record: who registered it, through which registrar, when it was created, and when it is due to expire. This increasingly occurs over RDAP, a newer structured protocol that most registries have adopted, though the result is presented the same way regardless of protocol.

Most contact information that WHOIS previously exposed in full is now redacted by default, a change driven largely by GDPR. Seeing a registrar's generic privacy service instead of a registrant's name is expected, not an indication of a problem. The fields that remain reliably useful are expiry tracking, confirmation that a domain transfer completed, and identification of the name servers currently controlling a domain's DNS.

WHOIS and a DNS Lookup answer different questions. WHOIS addresses registration; DNS addresses where a domain's traffic and mail are actually routed. A domain can be valid in one and misconfigured in the other.
